Chen: Hello, how are you Mr. Jerry Yan
J: How are you, may I know what’s your name
Chen: I’m Chen Bao Er, Janis

J: Hello! How are you
Chen: Ni hao, I’m really glad that I’m able to meet you here in Hong Kong, I just heard how you spoke your Cantonese and it’s really improving a lot!
J: Maybe… I don’t know, yeah, if it’s possible to be able to learn Cantonese…
Chen: When Jerry Yan comes out everybody feels that he’s so handsome, we feel that this your strength, but you’re still trying hard to let other people see that inside you there’s still a lot of things that you can give besides that, do you feel that being physically handsome is a burden for you?
J: It doesn’t just end as a burden, it’s like sometimes I feel that I already exerted a lot of effort in acting, but why do they always say he’s gorgeous… but they never see how… for example in what scene do they see a different kind of acting. I think that kind of feeling is like… let’s say Andy Lau, I feel that he’s really handsome, then I also feel that he’s really good in acting, even his tastes are awesome, but every time people see him they will say: ” That movie you just had… you’re really handsome there…” but I think what he really wanted to hear is: “Your acting skills are really good in that movie, that role is very challenging”,
so you know… I want to hear everybody’s opinion about those.
Chen: So Andy Lau is your role model? Is he your idol?
J: I think everybody idolize him. Just like Andy Lau, Sammi Cheng, then Tony Leung… I can see that they really do their best in acting and I want to be like them improving continuously. Just like a while ago many reporters were asking me about Rain, I think when they asked me if my fans would like him will I be afraid, I said that for me it’s a good thing, because it means I still have a chance for improvement, and I feel that I must do something that’s different from what I’ve done before. I feel that the person that I am before is like being put into one place and just shine there, whenever somebody sees me they want me to smile, then I was hoping that I can do more rather than that, including those times when I look weak, I want to express a more energetic me… I hope that I can show more of me, including not only in acting, also in every performance… The important thing is our acting skill and superb stage performance.
Chen: Yes, when you said Rain, everybody say that Rain’s stage performance can really bring the house down, everybody can remember his songs and his dance as well, everybody can remember his sexy performances, so how about you, do you have any limitations? Onstage or in acting?
J: Let’s see if everybody would want to see me like that… because…
Chen: Of course everybody would want to see you like that! (yanaliao: hmm… me too! Hehe…)
J: How do you expect others to see a not so well-built body… people wouldn’t want to see that, right now I am… when I see his performance, I was hoping that I can be given enough time and chance… to be able to find a more refined Jerry Yan… So I was thinking if I can do it right now, I wouldn’t have any limitations, but if I can do something that other people will think that it’s a good performance, I’m just saying that losing your shirt doesn’t give any importance, but if I performed and this made everybody feel that I did my best, I think I will also do anything and try whatever is instored for me… but really it shouldn’t look awful, if everybody see him I’m sure they’ll drool over him, but when they see me they’ll just laugh
Chen: No they won’t. For the fans, taking your shirt off or not is a very important point
J: Really?
Chen: yes!
J: Right, but the important thing is if it looks good.
Chen: Are you satisfied with your body? Your muscles?
J: I think there’s still a room for improvement, it really can be better, I’m giving myself a lot of space for hard work, right now I think… what did you just say a while ago?
Chen: I saw your picture when you were just a model, it’s really sexy
J: I’m just hoping right now that my body will just remain fit and not too much muscles, but there are times, when I have the time I do exercise, because I really love playing basketball, and do exercises, so I’m hoping that I can exercise more and continuously let myself maintain my body figure, just to keep fit but I don’t want to be like…
Chen: those with so many muscles
J: Yes…

Chen: Whenever I see you , you are taking pictures, signing autographs etc…
J: But I’m always happy, that’s true, because I feel that whenever I see them, I always thought of smiling, it’s because of too much pressure at work, so whenever I go out and there’s a lot of people joining you, whenever they see you it makes them happy, then I can be infected by that feeling of joy…
Chen: You were young when you started working, when you became an artist, will it be easier for you to get by this entertainment world with the patience that you had when you were still working then, did it help you in some way?
J: In what way?
Chen: Now that you’re an artist, when you have an activity do you still have to do it secretly?
J: You’re talking about in what way?
Chen: Then in your mood…
J: Oh in that case I’m already used to it, because I myself is also very strict with what I do, that’s why if people wanted me to do well in whatever I’m working on, I’m happy with it, but of course, maybe with the interaction with other people I’m still not used to it, I’m always reminded of that, to smile and do this and that… Maybe before when I just came out, it’s easy to act cool, then when people will see me not smiling, it looks like I’m arrogant or…
Chen: You don’t have that kind of aura, it’s absolutely not like that, you look like you’re the very intimate kind
J: But there are many people who say I’m like that, that’s why I don’t believe it, before when I was just working, people won’t really mind if you smile or not
Chen: that’s true
J: Before I had numerous jobs and I really worked hard for it, there’s no one telling me to be in good terms with whom… maybe in communicating… or telling people that I must implant a good impression with whom…
Chen: Interaction between people
J: That’s why in this way, when I entered this business I’m not used to it, until it came to a point when I wanted to give up, because that time I feel that I bear a very childish attitude.
Chen: What made you stay? When you thought of leaving that time…
J: That time I was thinking that I have the opportunity to go further and better, because after we had “Meteor Garden”, I feel that I never had a good project, I thought if I leave just like that, it’s like…
Chen: you’ll feel regretful
J: Not actually regretful, let me say it’s a rare opportunity… I feel that given this kind of opportunity, I should challenge myself to do better with whatever role I have… To do my best not to think about it that much… like the communication part with other people, that time I really don’t know how. Until now, whenever I do some interviews, I become very nervous but I don’t know why
Chen: Until now?
J: Yes, just like while I was just up there, maybe you can see me smiling up there, but I really feel uncomfortable, I still feel afraid…
Unanimously Yan’s way
J: I feel that in “Meteor Garden” I didn’t really have that big break in acting my role, it’s because playing Dao Ming Si’s character is almost playing my own character, There are times when I act in that series, I feel at ease. Now slowly I was able to be with Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng’s “Magic Kitchen”, then the series “The Hospital”, it really gave me a new role apart from myself, then I slowly feel that there’s a chance to internalize what it’s like to really act, telling me what to do, it’s different with Dao Ming Si’s character, I can say it’s a challenge for me, maybe my assignments….
Chen: You just mentioned “Meteor Garden”, you said that you’re almost the same as that character, but the way we see it, Dao Ming Si is very self-centered, there are times that he’s very controlling with his girlfriend
J: that’s right
Chen: it’s like you’re mine
J: that’s right
Chen: you’re not somebody else’s , that kind of feeling
J: yes, that’s right
Chen: You’re like that?
J: yes, I was like that before…
Chen: Really? You look like you’re a grown-up kind of fellow
J: Grown-up man… I don’t think it can be described as a grown-up man, it’s like… maybe because of so many relationships ending with break-ups then having been rejected by other people
Chen: Really?
J: Yes, that’s why maybe I’ve been too careful and I would want to really secure you you know that… it’s because of that feeling I had before and the experiences I had, then I would… you know I feel if you talk about love, I always feel that there are many times I have some situations that’s the same with Dao Ming Si, when you really like a person very much, you always have that feeling that the person keeps on slipping away from you, you know, it’s like if I can do something for my other half… whatever I can do… I ‘m willing to do it just for her…
Chen: You said that you had many relationships that girls rejected you, why areyou so pitiful? Why is it like that?
J: I don’t know, maybe when I treat girls in a good way, sometimes it's good that it reaches to a certain extent, they will be so used to it, then they would feel that I’m already used to it, it’s like when there’s something that you’re already use d to, maybe I just don’t know how to explain it, yeah… so… of course I consider that experience as a good one, it’s because there are times when I am shooting, especially when I shoot for a very emotional scene, then I have to express my hurt and sadness, I just have to think about love, then I can be in pain… ( awww… )
Chen: Really?
J: I would feel very sad, it’s because some of the past experiences I had including the scene when Dao Ming Si had to cry, it’s about that time when someone just rejected me, then there will be too much emotions, then… whenever you see Dao Ming Si cry, those are tears of my true feelings which are revealed in front of the audience.
Chen: oh… so sad
J: It’s not that sad, I can say that it’s all a good experience for me, those feelings of love, if you don't get hurt in a relationship, then there won’t be any feelings left inside of me, then it can’t be used to develop my feelings in shooting a series, come to think of it, I should really thank them.

Chen: Jerry you’re a person with a lot of emotions, after entering the entertainment business, will there be greater pressure when you enter a relationship?
J: Pressure is just about right, because I feel if there’s someone who is suitable for me, I really hope that I could … yeah you know… there would be a person to take care of. I feel that it’s very important to me, including my work outside this country, then there are times when I’m not in a good mood, I still wish that there would be a girl who can talk to me, even cry and laugh with me, those kind of feeling…
Chen: yeah, but if you really enter a relationship, will you announce it to the public?
J: Announce it to the public? I haven’t thought of that question, yeah… it depends on the situation, see how fate does it…
Chen: What kind of girl will you choose?
J: What kind of girl to choose, I think what I want in a girl right now is to listen to everything I say, then… you know I’m a little bit childish, there are times I’m just too childish, then I do not act the way people my age are suppose to act, maybe because of the environment I had when I was small, then I hope that the girl would give me more hugs and hold me, then… there are times that I would like to feel what it’s like to be treated by girls…
Chen: Do you have an objective girl in mind?
J: Do I have a prospect right now?
Chen: Do you?
J: right now…
Chen: Have you met some girls you like?
J: Right now… I have more opportunities in looking for one, then whenever I see one I feel that she’s easy to talk to, but because of work, like there are times when I was shooting in Japan, then there are times I would be in Korea working, going back and forth honestly… but there are no right opportunities wherein for example we met in Taiwan, or somewhere else… then we can have that chance… because I feel that between a person, it’s easy to be good together, but there are some instances… including what you say… for example you say that I am really good enough for you? I feel that there are also something not good about myself in some aspects, like for example there are times that I act so childish, then… I’m really childish… then…
Chen: Being childish is cute you know, girls also like that kind of personality
J: But there are times you feel… just like Dao Ming Si, people say he’s unreasonable, in the real world, you say he’s cute, but in the eyes of other people he is really unreasonable, then I feel that it takes two people to really understand each other, before you can say there’s something… but I really hope that if I entered into a relationship it would be a full blast, because I feel that I need that kind of space right now, to let myself spill out some of my attention because of the pressure at work, then including going to other countries and shooting series, then sometimes when I get too much negative emotions in shooting the series, when I come back, I need someone so that she can hold my head, then while I’m having a hard time I can talk to her about my feelings , having that kind of feeling is so good, maybe because I was just brought up by my mom, so maybe I’m thirsting for someone to look after me like that.
Yan does what he promises
Chen: After “Meteor Garden”, you have tried many things like singing, then right now you’re shooting “The Hospital”, your role there is a doctor, it’s a different role, are you happy with the big change in your role?
J: Yes, of course… because I feel that the script in this series is really good, then with the album I had, I feel that I had a great improvement also, then… then.. that’s right… right now I feel that I’m slowly catching up into things, then there are also opportunities that are not bad, I can start acting, but of course I’m just new… so…
Chen: You’re not new… you’re already…
J: You know acting-wise, I feel that I still have more chances of improvement
Chen: You know what we see is, Jerry you have a lot of things, your fans, your profession is quite good, but do you still have anything in your heart that you want to achieve?
J: Yes there is, there are many, including acting… then singing… just now after I talked with my fans, I just told them, if we have an upcoming concert, I won’t let everybody see the Jerry Yan they saw before… whatever I’m doing I still have many chances of re-arranging it. But I wouldn’t say it here of course, but I really wish that everybody… just like the reporter I just joked with a while ago, didn’t you just drool over RAIN when you saw him? Then I said, you have to leave a little “drool” for me until we have our concert, it means that I will give myself an objective, to show a different thing and let everybody see our efforts.
Chen: I wish you good luck and I hope you can find yourself a true girlfriend
J: Thank you! You also… hope you can find a good man for yourself!
