9/23 Jerry Yan The Sacrifice for Growing

Frankly speaking, before i interview this Jerry Yan who was popular throughout Asia, I was prepared to face a nervous and quiet him. From Meteor Garden, he flew up, after which, F4 went by their own ways. 3 years, now he has his own solo album, "Di Yi Chi", and his popularity stills stays high up. However, from what i see and from the rumours i heard, he seems to be the one who was always the most disobedient. I heard that he's too serious, causing himself and everyone around him hard to feel relax; heard that he have seen alot ; heard that he is very self-protective, and don't like to do interviews... And, it's not the first time i've seen him being nervous and unwilling to speak in front of the big group.
However, from the first moment i saw him, he was relaxed and cheerful, even energetic, and our conversation went very smoothly, his actions made me surpised, all the crew around was shocked too. At that time, i realised, this boy who was so popular throughout Asia, who was so affected when he just stepped into the entertainment circle, there was too much he didn't know and too much opinions. He actually wants to communicate with the others, but the complications in the circle caused the innocent him unable to decide what's the right path to do it. In the end, he, who was hurt, can only choose to hide and protect himself. However, at a relaxed atmosphere, the way he communicates with people shocks us, he is unwilling to be misunderstood, unwilling to allow his own thinkings go haywire, he wants to tell everyone what is the real Jerry Yan.
Ever since F4 went popular, they were the "Flower Boys", almost everyone used their appearence to judge them.
Many judge them as the "Cheng Hua Yi Xian" fate, using their youth to do whatever they can grab was many people's thinking. However, the young Jerry refuses to be just a flower pot, he wants people to see his hard work under his appearence, he wants people to see a different thing, however, it became the biggest problem of him in this circle.
Seeing Jerry carrying his smile and talking about his problems, many a times, i could not bear to stop him from talking about it, in this way, there wasn't much a chance for him to speak. I recorded the interview genuinely, so as to potray his real opinions to everyone genuinely, although there was a limit, this was still not the end of our conversation. I just find that, with a boy who has the heart of only to work harder, a boy who wants to work hard so as to not let others think of him only by his appearence, there's no reason not to give him any support. Besides, he's a superidol that could affect so many young people.
Lastly, the main message which he wants to give out from this interview was, he hopes to work with a good china director, he doesn't ask for any roles, what he wants is the chance to learn.
His problems of stepping into this entertainment circle -
Reporter : I heard that when you're facing the media, you're feel nervous, is it true ?
Jerry : When it's a group of media, that's because i'm not used to such big scenes, that's my character.
Reporter : I've seen u at such scenes, you'll become very tensed.
Jerry : Yes, because i don't know what to say. I'm actually quite relaxed privately down. During the F4 times, there's still the other 3 blocking me and i'll just stand around and act cool and forget it. But now, i have to face so many alone, i'm not very used to it. But, it's alright now, i feel that most of the media are actually quite friendly, it isn't like when the 4 of us first came out, maybe those media were quite sensitive at that time, thus i became a role of self-protect. I didn't know what to talk to them about, that's because sometimes when i start talking too much, people would write anyhow.Thus, i chose to be quiet, especially when i first came into the circle as i had not enough experience, and i was a newbie, many things happened. I used to grow up in a very innocent environment, i just love to play basketball, and i don't have much society experience, i didn't know the complications in this circle. Thus, i got to know many punishments when i first came in, as i
didn't know there were so many rules between humans, i didn't think that much, at that time, so many things happened, making myself feel i'm so ignorant, maybe because i was still young and inexperience. Thus, after that when i got the chance to flim a movie with Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng, i realised in this circle, you have to always be very mature. I don't know if u understand my words.
Reporter : Of course i do, just like how we Beijing people say , Yao Hui Lai Shi Er.
Jerry : I was actually a big boy. IN fact, when i flim Meteor Garden , i really felt my character was like Dao Ming Si. Daomingsi is liked by everyone when put on screens, but puting him in life, in the eyes of reporters, he's ignorant, and adding a little childish and it's also stuborness. However, at that time, i didn't know i had to be polite and kind to everyone in this circle. To us, many were adults, and we'll just nod our heads after seeing everyone. However, we didn't expect to find that it's not enough, it should make people feel more warmth, this way there won't be misunderstandings or invite rumours.
Reporter : In other words, its to say, you didn't have enough time to prepare and you've got popular.
Jerry : There was no preparation .(laughs) As it was really very fun when fliming the show at that time, really didn't think that much. And we didn't think that it'll give us the power to be so popular, as to say, the pressure behind was also huge as u get so many people's attention in such a short time. You think of it, none of the 4 of us had any trainings, we didn't had anything, when we knew nothing, we were pushed to the stage. With my character, i find that it doesn't suit me. From my environment i grew up in...from young i was the class monitor. I always find that everything needs preparation. Only do things after preparation, and not to other's benefit. Or whether is it under other's request to be pushed out...how do i describe ? I have to be tactful when talking now, or i might get scolded again by people (laughs)
Reporter : At least i won't write anyhow.
Jerry : That's blocking people's wealth path, that's because or the person's heart. Some things which you know its bad, you are unwilling to do it. But, under such a environment, people want to earn money, thus if you don't do it, you'll be offending some high rank people. You offend them accidently, they would use all kinds of methods to pull you down or they'll make u very ugly. After that, i found that i needed practice in this circle. Cause other than practising, i can't think of any other ways.
I feel myself getting older within these 2 years.
Reporter : Many people say the growing stage of a young person in the entertainment is much much higher than one who is growing up in the society.
Jerry : I think it's ten times higher.
Reporter : Than, do you feel that you have grow up very fast within these 2 years ?
Jerry : I find that i have grown older , seriously speaking, it's the thinking. When i first came into this circle, i felt that my happiness really came from the heart, i feel myself just being a big boy. I find that there's no problems behind my back. However, getting to be in touch with so many things, it became the real cruel truth. I didn't understand such things in the past, i have never thought that humans would have such a dark side, it's something which you can never think of. For example, i was very innocent in the past, when i see you and i like you, i'll talk to you about lots of things, but this person might do something which would make you so unhappy behind your back. For example, we have too many people around us, everyone would treat us very well, but some people would talk about different things behind our backs. When you have a chance to hear about this, you'll find that this person is so scary! At that time, i felt that it's scary. That's because i'm a person who
would use my heart to make friends with that person if that person shows that they like me or want to be friends with me. Than i'll talk about lots of heartfelt words. But, when i talk about such heartfelt words, i didn't have the intention to hurt anyone, i'm just a very straightfoward person. However, i didn't know such a character would teach me a huge lesson during my 2 years in this circle. This character brought me huge problems, thus in this path up till now, i find that it's good too, cause i see many reality facts. In this way, you'll know what kind of attitude you should use in what kind of environment, and to use what kind of attitude to treat that person. I can never be like the past, to be depend on the person who treat me like a kid and i'll believe him naively, it was this person who "sold" you and said "Thankyou."
Reporter : Do you feel sad ?
Jerry : Although i use a very calm tone to tell you, privately down, i used lots of effort to make myself accept, and than i see the real fact, and than i ....no choice, who asks myself to want to be the real Jerry Yan. Actually, my character is that, if you don't allow me to do my best, i'll give up. Just like this album, i cannot deny that i have given up on it halfway, that's because i find that its too much pressure, adding up to some pressure from the top. Anyway, people just want to earn money from you when you're at the top most popularity. However to me, i'll like to tell them, other than earning money, can i do some other things as well, to allow everyone to see the real Jerry Yan is different from other people, why is he popular ? I often think to myself late at night, people see Jerry Yan with a not bad appearence, but i would ask myself, What you have to be so popular ? What rights he have to get whatever people want to get for their whole life and they can't get it ?
Than, what do you think i can do ? I find that, the only thing i can do, is to continue to ask more out of myself, and than i'll do what i can do best within my limits. Right now, that's the only thing which i can do which is within my limits. Other things , i really find that, i have been pressed down to the extent of being unable to breathe as an example. That's because many people feel Jerry Yan only released an album and that's all. However, no one would have thought that for me to fight for a song, i would have the experience of people not understanding me at the back, people would use all kinds of cold words and sacarstic words to say, He's like that, can he sing this song ? Why does he want to sing this song ? You'll just quickly finish recording your songs, anyway, you are so good now, just finish recording it and sell, why must everyone suffer. However, standing at my own benedit, i'll say yes, thats right, i find that you people see me as i want to sing well, i also spent
money to go for lessons, to learn instruments, to learn the piano, and i am involved in the whole album production, including composing lyrics and jian zhi. Many a times, i find that i have already done a level more than lots of people who are involved in this album, however to me, that's a promise to everyone.
